Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships 2016

Congratulations to our young fencers who performed brilliantly at the Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships 2016 held in Dammam, Saudi Arabia and Manama, Bahrain from Feb 20-29.

Kevin Jerrold Chan bagged a silver medal in Men’s Foil Junior Individual category.

Kiria Tikanah Abdul Rahman won a bronze medal in Women’s Epee Junior Individual category.

It was indeed a proud moment for Kiria, especially when she struggled in her poules, winning 2 out of 5 bouts.  She was ranked 31 out of 53 fencers after poules, she met Dina Taher from Palestine (ranked 34) in round of 64 and won convincingly 15-3.

In Round of 32, she met Lai Jiang Ling from China (ranked 2 after poules) and she surprised everyone with an unexpected win of 15-13.

In Round of 16, Kiria faced another China fencer, Lin Li Feng and again she won 15-10. It was a great result as she had single-handedly knocked off 2 out of 4 China fencers.

In Round 8, she met  Ekaterina Gettueva from Kyrgzstan and matched into the semi-finals with a 15-9 win.

She lost to Miho Yoshimura from Japan (who eventually won the title) 15-10.  It was a tough match competing with a stronger and more experienced Japanese fencer, but Kiria remained undaunted and fought for every point.
