National team fencer and SEA Games 2015 double Silver medallist Lim Wei Wen set a new record for the Men’s Epee event by notching a first ever podium finish at the Dublin Satellite on Novemeber 28.
After a decent start with a 4-2 result in the poules, he proceeded to competently dismantle the next few opponents, beating Paul Verdon from Ireland 15-6, Lukas Steis from Slovakia 15-9, and Daniele Zorzato from Switzerland 15-9. In the quarterfinal match, he met Radoslaw Zawrotniak, a Polish fencer ranked 34th in the world and won 14-13 in a scintillating match to book a place in the semi-finals.
In the semi-final match, he faced off against another Polish fencer, Mateusz Antkiewicz but was defeated 15-10. Still, his performance was enough for a bronze medal and 2 FIE points.
On the FIE ranking, Wei Wen is currently ranked 150th with 8 points, 3 points behind Samson Lee who is ranked 133th with 11 points. We wish them every success on their path towards Olympic qualification!
